Midterm Objectives - David

2009 March 4
by david

My documentary seeks to explore how Bergen Belsen has shaped my family - its identity, values, and future. How has it affected my parents who are the second generation (2G), my sister, cousins, and myself (3G), and how will it affect the emerging 4G?

I want to create an exploratory experience for my audience, one of delving into my family history as it relates to Belsen and the Holocaust. After introducing the history of Belsen and the members of my family, I want to allow the viewer to choose a lens with which to explore. I hope to create a layered video where a certain event will be interpreted by multiple members of my family, as well as the ability of exploring the relationships within my family as compared from the perspectives from 1G to 4G. Hopefully the piece will be compelling, but also inspire viewers to think about how their own family histories have shaped them.

Timeline:
3/12 - log and capture remaining home video
3/19 - 1G interviews
3/26 - 2G interviews
4/2 - 3G interviews
4/9 - family interviews continued, viewer feedback
4/16 - fine tune documentary timeline
4/23 - editing
4/30 - fine tuning
(I have a feeling that I may need to further focus the scope of my project to complete it by the end of April…)

I hope user testing will help me fine tune the scope of the project, if it is indeed compelling and effective, and whether the interaction works for the nature and medium of the documentary.
